Sight Of Emptiness: Absolution of humanity
12/05/10 || Smalley
I know basically nothing about the local metal scene in Costa Rica (and I bet most of the non-Costa Rican world is the same way), but if Sight Of Emptiness is any indication of the general quality down there, then it’s no wonder! First off, the production on “Absolution of humanity” is incredibly low-fi, to the point where I wonder if they recorded this as a fucken demo first, then just decided to release it as a finished album instead! The rhythm and lead guitars both sound bad, the bass is distractingly high in the mix, serving as an added annoyance rather than as a subtle aid, and to top it all off, the drum sound is pathetically thin as well. It’s just atrocious stuff all-around.
Besides the production problems, their vocalist’s singing is about as bad as his lame nickname, as he sticks to either a generic death growl or extremely annoying, hoarse shrieking (and he sings a lot here, so you’ll get very acquainted with his weak vocal stylings). Any basic songwriting quality that might be hiding here is buried under the band’s many sound problems, and while their lead guitarist is actually really good, he doesn’t get to let loose with the soloage nearly often enough, which would’ve helped this album to go down a bit smoother, if not really salvage it overall.
In the end, I don’t know if Sight Of Emptiness want to be death metal, melo death, metalcore, thrash, or what ever else have you, but whatever they are, it sure as hell isn’t good.
